Linking to SDCC Library e-Resources *NEW SERVER*

How to create links to SDCC Library e-resources that you can paste into Canvas, emails, web sites and more!

Persistent Linking Instructions for Films on Demand

Films on Demand (FOD) has two methods to connect to its videos in Canvas:

I. Method #1: Using the LTI ("app") built into the Text Editor to embed a video with a player into a page.

II. Method #2: Searching the FOD database directly and copying and pasting the persistent link URL or embed code.

Method #1: Follow these steps to use the Films on Demand LTI to embed a FOD video within player in Canvas:

Canvas provides LTI (Learning Tool Interoperability) for Films on Demand in your editing mode. This means there is a built-in app in the Text Editor that allows you to search and embed a FOD video (with a player) without ever leaving Canvas AND once you've embedded the video this way, students don't have to enter another login credential for FOD. The video should play immediately.

Click on the plug icon in the Text Editor to see a drop-down of LTI options (Apps), one of which is FOD. Then search for a film. This bypasses the proxy server's prompt for a login, and allows for immediate viewing. Searching capabilities may vary with browser.

Method #2: Follow these steps to create persistent links to materials in the Films on Demand database:

Start at the A-Z Databases page (or Videos page):

  1. Go to the Films on Demand database.
  2. Find a film title or a film segment.
  3. Click on a film title or the film segment to open it.
  4. Click on the Share icon.
  5. Click on the Embed/Link link in the pop-up box.
  6. Copy the Record URL or Segment URL in the pop-up box.  Both versions include the remote access prefix in the URL. (You can also copy the embed code from here for the embedded player, if you like.)

More details on using Films on Demand here: FOD Quick Start Guide

Then go to your Canvas shell:

  • Within a text editor box, paste in the persistent link, OR
  • Within a Module, create a new External Link and paste in the persistent link as the URL. Make sure to check the box for the Load in a new tab option. Why?

Build a Playlist

You can create a playlist of different video clips in FOD, and even upload a short introductory/explanatory video!

See the video below for instructions AND read the text below the player to create the correct link for authentication. Creating a personal account is free, and you must do so to create a playlist, but the resulting URL will be missing the remote access prefix. See text below.

When you are signed into a personal account in FOD to create a playlist, FOD will create URLs that will be missing the remote access prefix that takes users through the Library's proxy server for authentication. The image below shows two different browsers, one with the user signed in and the other not signed in. Note the difference in the URLs, as the second one has the prefix.

Example Screenshot:

**As of December 18, 2023, the link text in this screenshot is outdated. Be sure to replace libraryaccess.sdcity.edu with sdcity.idm.oclc.org for the new proxy server.**

Whether you use the record URL or the embed code that FOD provides, ***you must fix the URL in order to include the remote access prefix in the URL*** so your students can authenticate properly. Otherwise they will get an FOD login screen which will not take their student ID and last name, which will lead to much frustration. So be sure your playlist URL contains the prefix I've bolded in red below in this example here:

http://sdcity.idm.oclc.org/login?url=https://fod.infobase.com/PortalPlaylists.aspx?wID=102759&AssignmentID=EML8JC

(Example: that URL will take you to see this playlist of selections from three episodes of the series Restoring Paradise)
