Abstract

SOFIA LAUREIN, FACULTY

Dr. Sofia Laurein was born in Odessa, Ukraine. She graduated from Odessa State University named after Mechnikov with a B.A. in philology and literature and completed a Ph.D. in World History from Moscow Humanities University in 2005. She and her family migrated from the USSR to the US in 1989. Initially, Sofia worked six part-time jobs to help the family survive and acculturate to a totally different life in the US. She utilized her English and Russian language skills to become a highly competent translator and interpreter. She also served as an expert in organized crime cases due to the fact that she completed her Ph.D. dissertation titled “Organized Crime in the USA: Problems and Tendencies (1980s – beginning of 2000)” After many years as an adjunct instructor, Sofia became a full-time professor in the History and Political Science Department in 2007.
