Nathan Katungi, Professor of Black Studies

Nathan Katungi was born in Uganda in 1945 and has taught Black Studies at San Diego City College for the last forty years, from 1973 to the present. Nathan was one of the youngest of fourteen children and lived on the family farm until he attended boarding school in the sixth grade. He came to the United States in the 1960s to attend Lewis and Clark College, graduating in 1970. He completed his graduate studies at the University of Oregon in 1972.

City College hired Nathan during the early formation of the Black Studies Department. Nathan discusses the student protests of the 1960s and 1970s, the struggle to establish Black Studies at different college campuses, and his experiences with City College students. Nathan officially retired from City College in 2006, but continues to teach History of the U.S., Black Perspectives.
