LibChat Reference Service

What is the LibChat (Live Chat) Reference Service?

About This Service:

The LibChat service is a live library research service staffed by SDCC librarians and by librarians from around the world. To help you!

  • This chat service is available 24 hours per day, 7 days per week.
  • Answers may include research strategies, finding information on a topic, and basic information about San Diego City College Library. The librarian may either give you an answer or show you how to find an answer yourself.
  • The service is usually a text chat, but also has a Zoom feature that allows you to do a screen share, if you accept the Zoom invite sent from the librarian.
  • The service employs librarians from around the world, so the librarian you're chatting with may not be from San Diego City College. For questions about your library account or other local issues, you may need to contact personnel at San Diego City College directly. See the Contact Us @ the Library page for contact details.

Getting Started:

  • Fill out the "Ask Us!" form (widget or slider) to begin a session.
  • A session usually lasts less than 15 minutes.
  • A transcript of the session will be sent to your email address, if you request it. To get a transcript, click the envelope icon in the top right-hand corner of the chat box while you are in a session.

If You Get Disconnected:

  • Log into the service again.
  • You may not get the same librarian to answer. In that case, tell the new librarian where you were in the process of getting an answer so they can pick up from where you left off.

Thank you for using our online live reference service!
