Zines 101: How to Make a Zine

This page should provide a general overview on zine making. Remember, zines are DIY, so don't feel pressured to have a fancy zine.

Supplies

As mentioned on the home page of this guide, you don't need much to make a zine. Here are some ideas to help you get started zine-making.

For a physical zine:

  • Paper
    • Any size or color! Zines can be folded into a booklet, stapled, or bound any way you choose. One 8.5x11 piece of paper can be folded to create a mini zine.
  • Scissors
    • Anything sharp you can use to safely cut out other materials you may choose to use.
  • Collage materials
    • If you'd like your zine to feature collages of images or words, you can use old magazines, newspapers, books, or printed images.
  • Adhesives
    • Glue or tape to secure the materials to the zine.
  • Writing/drawing materials
    • Pencils, pens, markers, paint, etc.
  • Stapler or thread
    • If you plan on assembling/binding pages.
  • Photocopier
    • If you'd like to copy and redistribute your zine.

For a digital zine:

  • An editing software (Canva, Photoshop, etc.)
  • Images and fonts
  • Printer (if you want a physical copy)

Remember, you can always make a hybrid zine, which is a combination of physical and digital materials. You can make physical collages, scan the work, and assemble on the computer
