Navigating the complexities of higher education can be challenging for any student, but undocumented students often face additional hurdles that require tailored resources and support. We understand that if you're undocumented, you might be afraid to ask for help or use these resources. We encourage you to! The folks at City College are always happy to connect you with the right resources to ease any stress or burden during your time in college. We're here for you!

There are many important milestones in California and the U.S. that impacted the lives of undocumented citizens. Below are some of the key milestones that affect college students.

  • California DREAM Act
    • Passed in 2011, the DREAM Act is a package of California state laws that allow children who were brought into the US under the age of 16 without proper visas/immigration documentation who have attended school on a regular basis and otherwise meet in-state tuition and GPA requirements to apply for student financial aid benefits.
  • Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA)
    • DACA is an executive order by President Obama that granted eligible undocumented youth a 2-year renewable temporary relief from deportation, a social security number for work authorization, and a driver license/identification. DACA does not currently provide a long-term pathway to citizenship.
  • AB 1645
    • Signed by Governor Gavin Newsom in 2019, requires all public colleges and universities in California, including the California Community Colleges, to designate a staff person as a Dreamer Resource Liaison.
