English Composition

This research guide is intended to help students in City College English Composition Courses such as ENGL 101 and 205.

On this page, you'll find helpful ways to evaluate sources you find for credibility; an essential step in the research process!

Popular vs Scholarly Sources

Understanding the difference between popular and scholarly sources is very important when doing college-level research. Some professors require you only use scholarly sources in your essays, while some allow for a mix of popular and scholarly sources.

When using a popular source in your essay, you'll need to do a little extra work to ensure it's credible information.
