Videos (& Captioning): Accessing Videos

Finding, borrowing, and captioning videos for instructional use.

Videos: Availability & Loan Periods

Some items to keep in mind:

  • Videos in DVD format are housed at the Library's Circulation Desk and must be requested from there. Checkout for students is library use only; checkout for faculty is for classroom use.
  • Three streaming video collections: Films On Demand, Swank Digital Campus, and Kanopy, are licensed for use by City College students and faculty only. That means you must be taking or teaching a class at City College if you intend to use them (you will be prompted to authenticate when you click their links). Each college in our district has its own database collection for its authorized users.
  • Online databases will automatically log off after a certain amount of inactivity (times vary by vendor).
  • Most streaming video databases have a way to link to a particular video.
  • You can create a free account in a streaming video database in order to set up playlists and favorites.

Videos: Borrowing from Mesa or Miramar

City College faculty who find media in the library catalog that is shelved at Mesa or Miramar should call their libraries to find out their lending policies:

  • Mesa Circulation Desk: (619) 388-2696
  • Miramar Circulation Desk (619) 388-7310.

Where can I post my own videos?

Besides free web services like YouTube and, you have local options available to post instructional videos you have created. Just make sure they are captioned and contain no copyright infringements before you post.

Access these resources from off-campus!

I'm off campus, how do I get access?

  • You will be prompted for login information when you click on a link to a database or an e-book.
  • Use your CSID number and last name to access our electronic databases from off-campus. Type in your last name exactly the way you registered for classes.
  • You must be enrolled in at least one City College course during the current semester, and have fully paid your tuition and fees in order to log in.
  • Some databases require that your browser be set to accept all cookies.
  • Security software may interfere with a database's user authentication protocol. You may have to temporarily disable it in order to connect to a database.
  • If you still have problems with your login, please contact
