Rosiangela Escamilla, Alumna and Faculty
Rosiangela Escamilla was born in Tijuana, Mexico and later moved to Nayarit, a Mexican state on the Pacific Ocean. She spent her early childhood with her grandmother in a small rural village. She later moved to San Diego, reunited with her mother, and attended Point Loma High School. Escamilla entered the workforce at a young age and found employment in the food/service industry, but her most rewarding job was working as an ESL (English as a Second Language) tutor at O’Farrell Community School. Professor Escamilla eventually graduated as a Point Loma Pointer in 1998 and despite hardships was able to enroll in City College the following semester.
Professor Escamilla played collegiate soccer at City and successfully transferred to University of California, San Diego (UCSD) in 2006. She completing a Bachelor of Arts degree in Spanish Literature at UCSD and is currently working on her Ph.D. Her biographical essay discusses growing up in Nayarit, coming of age with hip-hop music, and historical events including the 1999 World Trade Organization meeting and the September 11 attacks in 2001.
